Scientific Games Acquisitions
The company’s roots stretch back to the creation of the first ever electro-mechanical pinball machine (through their acquired brands), and they have steadily built their enterprise into a global powerhouse incorporating the expertise of numerous other businesses. Scientific Games was originally its own brand, before being purchased by Autotote Systems. The latter grew from strength to strength, eventually taking on the name we know today when it acquired Scientific Games Holdings Corp. ‘s a rich, fascinating history that few (if any) competitors can equal. Today, the casino game provider has its headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada – the home of gambling.
As we mentioned earlier, Scientific Games is really the result of shrewd acquisitions and partnerships, with a long list of achievements behind them. Scientific Games created the world’s first instant lottery game way back in 1973. It was incorporated in Delaware in 1983 and went on to create the AEGIS open lottery gaming system in 1996, and Autotoe acquired the company in 2000. Autotote Systems became Scientific Games Corporation in 2001, and by 2004, they had created America’s first ever online lottery game. In 2012, they produced the first lottery mobile app for the iPhone, and acquired WMS Industries Inc. in 2012. WMS stands for Williams Manufacturing Company, founded by Harry E. Williams in 1943.
WMS had made a name for itself with a long line of gaming products, such as electronic gaming machines and the first Adaptive Gaming device (which saved customers’ achievements and trophies). Shuffle Master, which created the first mechanical card shuffler in 1983, was another brand acquired by Scientific Games in 2012. In 2013, they also acquired Bally Technologies, which dated back to 1932 with the Bally Hoo pinball machine. The Bally company had created the first slot machine too, as well as debuting the three-reel electro-mechanical slot machine with Money Honey (changing the industry forever).
Between 2016 and 2017, Scientific Games went on to acquire four more brands and signed a major omni-channel agreement to produce content for a major entertainment franchise. The first of these acquisitions was DEQ Systems Corp, a market leader in producing gaming content for brick-and-mortar casinos in over 30 countries. The second was Spicerack Media, creator of Bingo Showdown and other popular apps. The company had only launched in 2007, producing apps via Facebook, but their acquisition by Scientific Games was a major breakthrough.
The third acquisition was Lapis Software Associates, known for creating online lottery systems and associated software. Finally, the fourth brand Scientific Games acquired between 2016 and 2017 was Red7. They are a small team creating casino games and sports apps, based in the UK. Following this, Scientific Games secured the rights to produce gaming content based on James Bond – one of the world’s biggest names in the world of movies and novels. There is a huge fan-base out there who would no doubt lap up casino games featuring their favourite secret agent. Lets not forget that Scientific Games is also owning the iconic slot machine maker Barcrest, that have been around for more than 50 years.
– A massive brand with multi-channel content distribution
– Scientific Games has acquired and partnered with leading brands for an enhanced portfolio
– Covers casino, interactive, and instant lottery games with dedicated divisions for each
– Licenses limited to Europe
– The sheer range of products and services under the Scientific Games banner can be confusing for operators looking to work with them
Scientific Games Portfolio
Scientific Games produces an extensive selection of gaming cabinets and offline products, catering to brick-and-mortar venues. They have created machines based on popular properties (such as Seinfeld), multiplayer terminals, and much more. It’s a comprehensive range of solutions that makes the most of their acquisitions’ individual strengths.
Their online games distributed through SG Digital, and are featured at such massive gaming sites as Mr Green, Betsson, and Bet365. Their team can produce network and bespoke games, drawing on the skills of their nine international development teams, and their current catalogue of titles is remarkably diverse.
They are made for Flash and HTML5 compatibility, ensuring the highest quality of visuals and performance on desktop or mobile devices. Their games library includes slot games, poker, and table classics, including Wonder Hounds, Lightning Gems, Snow Leopard, Wild Dodo, 88 Fortunes, Triple Cash Wheel, King Kong Fury, Foxin Wins, Medusa II: Jackpots, Wild Play Super Bet, Samurai Split, Hula Hula Nights, Joker 1000, Sword of Destiny, and Rainbow Riches: Reels of Gold.
There are hundreds of others available, with 2000 titles in their catalogue altogether (developed by their own in-house teams and third-party suppliers). SG Digital also owns OpenBet, a leading platform for casino gambling and sportsbooks which famously processed over two billion wagers at the UK’s Grand National in 2017 (at an average of 68,000 per minute). What remains to be said about Scientific Games? They are, quite simply, a phenomenon of the gambling industry.
